Since I've been thinking a lot lately about eating locally, I have been increasingly aware of all the tasty things I consume that travel a long way to get to me. A large portion of the meat we eat is raised and butchered locally, we grow our own wheat, and in summer we grow vegetables. If I were to get truly serious about the whole thing, I could make pasta and become a more commited canner, but then there are things in my cupboards like olive oil and cumin, basmati rice, water chesnuts...things I would just have to do without. Even in summer, mangoes don't grow anywhere close to here, and the glorious avocado! I don't think I'm ready to make that leap just yet.
