Maybe reading the word simplicity inspires in you some negative feelings, but I assure you, it's NOT the case. I feel like making the move to live more sustainably is, in many ways, a move to live a 'complex simplicity'. I find that often it is much easier to NOT live this kind of simplicity - it is SO much easier to go out and buy new rather than trying to find second-hand; to use the plastic bags provided rather than your reusable bags that are so often forgotten - the list goes on. BUT, after 2010 and starting this site and New Leaf Handmade with my sister, it feels SO much more achievable. In small steps I've been making this move since Ava was 'incubating' in my tummy - but I know that with every small step and with the whole of 2010 behind my belt, 2011 can be the year when this idea really becomes my life, where it is easier to live this way than to go back, where implementing more and more sustainable ideas and ways of life into my daily routine is just that: routine.
With a new baby on the way, I don't know how much of this idea will actually bear fruit, but, that is one of the reasons why it seems so very important to me - there's a new baby on the way, a new baby that has the right to a world where simplicity reigns.
Here's a few of the ways I tried to be 'simple' over the Christmas season - a few of my handmade gifts and some gingerbread men gift tags. Let me tell you, some of these projects were WAY more complex than anticipated!
