i started reading barbara kingsolver's book animal, vegetable, miracle last night. i don't want to be that person who takes and takes and gives nothing back. i mean, who really likes those kids who ASK for a present or a treat every time you see them? or those people who make you understand that they just expect that things will be given to them without any work on their part? the world is kind of like that grandparent who always gives a treat. it isn't as if the grandparent wouldn't give the treat, of course they would! they live to shower treats on their grandchildren. but doesn't it seem likely that they sometimes wish that they could give out treats BEFORE someone asks? i imagine the earth that way - happy to give us what we need to survive but secretly wishing that instead of just expecting it, instead of simply taking, we would acknowledge our gratefulness, we would wait until the time was ripe for the gift to be given, we would give something back.
